20 Mule Canyon Road, in Death Valley, is considered by many just as a road to pass by or to pass through at the most. However, though not as rich of photographic opportunities as other locations in the Park, 20 Mule Canyon is a very nice spot to explore and offers coloured badlands, similar to those found at Artist's Palette, which can provide some inspiration for those looking for it.

Pre-dawn and early morning light offers the best opportunity to really enjoy the pastel colours and the hues created by the minerals embedded in the soft hills surrounding 20 Mule Canyon's winding dirt road.

The window of opportunity provided by the light is, as always when shooting in early morning or late afternoon, very small. However, if you have one extra morning available after visiting other locations richer in photographic opportunities, I recommend giving 20 Mule Canyon a try, you'll not be sorry.

Now for the technical stuff (click to go to the related product page): all images shown here have been shot with a Nikon D800E equipped with the Nikon 35mm f/1.4G AF-S, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-S and the Nikon 70-200mm f/4 AF-S VR II. For support I used a Gitzo tripod equipped with an Acratech GP-s ballhead; last, but certainly not least, I also used Singh-Ray filters, including a polarizer & various ND filters. Photos have been developed in Nikon Capture NX 2 and finished in Adobe Photoshop CS6.
Thank you for reading this far, and stay tuned for more! Coming up next, my user review of the Nikon 70-200mm f/4 AF-S VR II...
