VENICE, PART 1

I have been in Venice for a couple of days last winter, just before Carnival. I am always spellbound by the city and its beauty, and if you think you are too after just a visit during any of the various high tourist seasons (for Venice, it's almost always high season!), you should see it without the hassle of the inevitable hordes of tourists that you find there all the time - during Carnival for instance pedestrian traffic is so intense and people so squeezed on top of one other that in certain areas of the city you'll be lifted and toured around by the crowd itself, without any need for actually walking! By contrast, walking around the city in the morning with my Leica M9 this time of the year, I could see "real" local people minding their business, buying newspapers, transporting goods, going to work...

Strangely enough for such a small and confined city, you can even happen to bump in political demonstrations: nothing like oceanic crowds, of course; but here I bumped in a pretty small - though very vocal! - group of Egyptian immigrants express their disappointment for the new regime in their country, while an old lady sits, not only undisturbed by the event: she was actually rocking her head at the rhythm of the darbuka behind her...!

Now for the technical stuff (click to go to the related product page): all images shown here have been shot with the Leica M9 equipped with the Leica 50mm f/1 Noctilux-M, the Leica 90mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit and the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm f/4.0. Photos have been developed in Capture One Pro and finished in Adobe Photoshop CS6; B&W conversions have been done with Nik Silver Efex Pro.
