One of the places where you can find Venetian real life - surprisingly, especially at certain times of the day, even in tourist seasons! - is the market in Rialto. Historically one of the pulsating hearts of the city, today the market is definitely reduced in scope and size; however, it still serves as the main grocery, fish, meat shopping hub of Venice proper, and is populate it in the mornings by Venetians doing their shopping. My unobtrusive Leica M9 was perfect for shooting here without attracting too much attention:

It is difficult to find a time of the year when Venice is calm, but definitely worth it if one wants to see the city breath and live busy with its own activities, almost undisturbed by tourists - those tourist that, on the other hand, are its main source of income and its lifeline...

Now for the technical stuff (click to go to the related product page): all images shown here have been shot with the Leica M9 equipped with the Leica 50mm f/1 Noctilux-M, the Leica 90mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit and the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm f/4.0.
